Nature's Best Workout: Outdoor Activities for Fitness & Connection
Are you tired of the same ole gym routine or are you looking for a way to stay fit while immersing yourself in the beauty of nature? Is it time for you to step away from the stress of life and breathe in calm? In this blog, I will highlight some of the best outdoor activities to help to help break up the grind, help keep you in shape and will encourage you to feel more connected to the world around you.
1. Hiking - there's nothing like hitting the trails and exploring the great outdoors. Breathing in the fresh air, listening to the trees sway, the birds chirping and the rustling of some other little "friends" hiding away in the brush. Hiking not only provides a challenging workout for your legs but also your cardiovascular system and if that isn't enough to get you going, the hiking also allows you to discover hidden gems and breathtaking landscapes. Don't rush the hike, allow ample time to slow down and really take the experience in.
2. Biking - hop on your bike and peddle away to fitness and adventure. Biking is a low impact activity that offers a great workout for your heart and legs. Whether you choose to venture out onto the trails or bike around town, biking allows you to enjoy the fresh air and beautiful surroundings while elevating your heart rate.
3. Kayaking - take to the water and embrace the serenity of kayaking. Paddling through calm lakes, rivers or even the ocean (yikes!) not only provides a great upper body workout but also allows you to connect with the peacefulness of nature. Keep your eyes open and fully immerse yourself in nature as you glide through the landscapes, you may just see some wildlife along the way.
4. Outdoor Pilates/Yoga - combine the benefits of exercise and mindfulness with and outdoor class. Practicing in nature can enhance your connection to the earth and bring a sense of tranquility to your practice. Find a peaceful spot, roll out the mat and let the sounds of nature guide you through your flow.
5. Gardening - if you've never gardened before (my hand is up), you would be surprised at the amount of energy it takes to haul supplies, dig up the ground and plant. Gardening is a full body workout due to lifting, squatting, bending and digging. Gardening has many therapeutic benefits such as reduced stress, better sleep, sense of calm, connecting to the earth and relaxation. We could all use a little gardening in our lives especially when what we've planted come to fruition!
Getting fit and connecting with nature doesn't have to be boring or feel like a chore. By incorporating outdoor activities into your fitness routine, you can enjoy the physical benefits while immersing yourself in the beauty of the natural world. So grab your hiking boots, dust off your bike or paddle your way to a healthier more balanced you.
